Ben Marks

Ben Marks is famous for being one of the brightest and outstanding personalities of Magento. Magento is an open source ecommerce platform which is written in PHP. Ben Marks has extensive experience developing, educating and as a member of the community.  Ben Marks  has traveled around the world sharing his experience with Magento users as The Official Magento Evangelist ™. Marks has been developing in PHP since the days of osCommerce back in 2003. He has been developing, educating and evangelizing Magento since 2008.  There is not any personal information about Ben Marks, however it is known that Ben is married and they have a 27 years old son. 

 

While Ben Marks was working at Magento, he traveled a lot. As he once mentioned in one of his interviews, as for 2016 he has been at home for only 2 or 3 months. Ben Marks considers himself as very lucky in this case, because has got a wonderful wife who supports him in every situation and the social financial situation of his family was enough that his wife had the opportunity to travel with Ben. Even if it was impossible, Ben never left his family for that long.  Ben Marks told, while sharing his traveling experience, that as for him it is quite tough to live out of suitcases and in many cases the food options are not up to you. There can be situations when Ben can have dinner at the buffet or eat whatever he got in the plane during the flight. Ben Marks loves doing workouts, however he can not manage doing it regularly. However, when he was traveling he used to run and workout in that way. 

Ben Marks ended his work of being the former lead evangelist at Magento. By being absolute ecommerce tech savvy and expert Ben joined Shopware team as their new Director of Global Market Development, in March 2021.  

Ben explained his decision of quitting the Magento team. He worked almost two decades in ecommerce and he has met thousands of people whose lives were transformed by open source. Ben Marks mentioned that they are a small sample of developers who became founders, the entrepreneurs and of course the merchants who thrived thanks in large part to the freedom to discover and build the best solutions for engaging their customers. However, the conditions for success have vastly changed. As Ben Marks thinks, the ease of ecommerce open source gold rush has ended. Multinational marketplace and ridiculous SaaS platform valuations fuel hype and hyperactivity, taking much of the oxygen and opportunity from the landscape, even as legacy platforms go further upmarket, by leaving a huge gap.  Despite these conditions, the fundamentals are still the same, Ben Marks says that innovation is what shapes the future of ecommerce and nothing fosters innovation better than an open source. Shopware is a company and a community committed to an open source, not just the code but to the culture of collaborating in the open.
